Handmade Holiday Décor –
Anyone can buy seasonal, holiday decorations from a myriad of retail stores, but what is the fun in that? I love the personalized feel when you make the decorations yourself. Plus, the whole family seems to get invested in the fun. Then the decorations hold a special place in your heart and even become family heirlooms that mom made!
My mom, who is a create-aholic, has always been passionate about crafting, creative writing, cake decorating, flower arranging, card stamping, and any activity that she can put her artistic spin on. She has put in long hours making gingerbread houses from scratch… for the neighborhood. Or hollowing out hardened sugar egg molds, decorating the outsides with intricate icing designs, and filling the insides with miniature Easter scenes. For 7 years, she hand-stamped monthly greeting cards for a mailing list of 40 people… partly to keep in touch with friends and mainly to fulfill a visiting teaching calling in our church. She is on the top level of a high pedestal of crafting aficionados.
But now seems to be a different generation. Who has time for all that? Let alone the patience. (The A.D.D.-Attention Deficit Disorder side of me comes out.)
Then I discovered the joy of WOOD CRAFTING!!!
What is Wood Crafting?
Wood crafting combines two of my favorite creative hobbies:
- Painting plaster craft figurines with acrylic paint.
- Scrapbook paper-piecing.
There are the most adorable craft kits available for each holiday and season. Shops and online stores sell unfinished wood shapes and kits that you paint with acrylic paint and decorate with cute scrapbook paper.
Below, I have listed several of my favorite shops below that carry unfinished wood cut-outs and some finished and ready-for-sale.
